For individuals who have hearing loss, the expression “music to my ears” may take on a whole new meaning.

Exposing children to music can have a worthwhile impact on hearing as is highlighted by a joint study conducted by the University College London and the University of Helsinki.

Measuring Speech-in-Noise Performance

Speech-in-noise performance was the key measure researchers observed, putting 43 young kids in a clinical study for 14 to 17 months. 22 of the children enrolled had normal hearing while the remaining 21 had cochlear implants. Armed with the knowledge that the children with implants had difficulty understanding speech perception before the beginning of the study, researchers developed control and test sets, assigning participants to a non-singing (control) and singing (test) group.

The study showed a significant improvement in awareness and speech-in-noise performance for youngsters in the singing group compared to their counterparts in the non-singing group.

There is a great deal of research revealing the advantages to cognitive ability and speech processing offered by musical training and this research is only one of them. In loud settings, speech perception can be improved by musical training, and these results were backed by research carried out by the Montreal Neurological Institute

That study evaluated the brain activity of 30 participants, 15 musicians and 15 non-musicians, asking each to identify speech syllables through numerous background noise levels.

The ages of the participants in the research by Drs. Yi and Roberts, unlike the Helsinki/London study, averaged 22 years old. These participants had normal hearing but there was a substantial difference in results between the non-musicians and musicians.

Musicians Outperform Non-Musicians

The two groups performed equally under conditions without any noise, but the musicians would distinguish themselves as the study went on, outperforming non-musicians at all other signal-to-noise rates. Musicians have enhanced left interior frontal and right auditory areas of the brain which probably accounts for this ability to perform well on these tests.

But the advantages of musical training found from Drs. Yi and Robert’s research don’t simply end there. The auditory motor network is refined and united to the auditory system and speech motor system by this musical training according to this research.

These adult musicians in this study had all been trained when they were younger and had at least a decade of training. Musical training has a powerful impact and this once again backs that fact.

The Affect of Hearing Loss on Beethoven

Hearing loss has been a challenge for some of the world’s most well-known composers and musicians. Perhaps the most famous deaf composer, Ludwig van Beethoven was able to hear when he was born, but that began to deteriorate while he was in his late 20s.

Although Beethoven’s early childhood musical training would be regarded as severe by present standards, the foundation of the training may have been the conduit to extending his career as a composer. In fact, Beethoven actually lived the last decade of his life nearly completely deaf. Amazingly, it was over the last 15 years of his life that Beethoven composed some of his most popular pieces.
